Want to know what the first specialist we saw when Hyrum collapsed at his school in November 2020 was? You guessed correctly if you said an ENT. What?! Why an ENT? Well, they were concerned it was an inner/middle ear infection that was causing the balance issues. It was not!
The ENT specialist we saw then had more designations than I have seen in a while. We went through every test they had except a tilt test. His hearing was perfect, and his throat was fine. His turbinates were fine. He noted his rash and all of his other symptoms and the ENT felt that Hyrum needed neurology right away. He gave us a referral to neurology and told me to keep calling until they could get us in. He was the first one who told me that they were starting to see children with secondary issues after they had Covid. He was the one who threw us a life preserver.
So how can we now be facing his tonsils being removed? I am not sure what the answer is to that. Only that this was not originally the problem. It does not matter here nor there. There is no way to really find out, is there?
What we do know is that the surgery should take place in the middle of January for tonsils and adenoids and possibly shaving down his turbinates, depending on how his adenoids look. They are so backed up at Primaries right now. With how severe his apnea is, he will earn an overnight stay after the surgery. Lucky!!!
With all of the doctors, specialists, and appointments we have had, the first time anyone mentioned his tonsils being really large was at the pulmonologist just a few weeks ago in November this year (2022). Could this be new? I guess, it sure could be.
The tonsils/throat rating is the Mallampati score (0 is normal). Class 4 is the highest you can get. He won!!! Wait, it's not one you want to win.
