The empty cool pool was a perfect way to enjoy the weekend taking his sister back to college for the spring semester. Laughter and silliness were in full force on the four-hour drive down to her small college town. Quick getaways are hard to come by so four siblings joined me on this overnight trip.
After an exhilarating cool swim, we went back to our room to find that the one daughter who went back to the room first had a fever. Sheer panic swept over me. Could this be Covid back in our home? How could any of us escape it again with all of us being trapped in one room together? How could we get home? What would happen to each of us this time?
The next morning I managed to find the last over-the-counter test in this small town. As we sat waiting for the expectant pink lines, my heart dropped as two quickly and brightly appeared. Positive. Now for the journey home in our small sedan. We sat as strategically as possible with our masks on trying to enjoy the more sober trip home.
Isolation was the new game plan in our home. The urgency of trying to keep Hyrum from catching this virus dictated our routines. Somehow through it all, miraculously, not one of us caught it from her. How had we been so lucky? My elation was premature and short-lived. A few short weeks later, Covid would come screaming back into our home. Unexpected, from another corner of our world. This time, none of us would be so lucky.
